HOLLOW Soul Reaper Tutorial: Riku's Starter Quests

Last updated:

Start your Soul Reaper training with Officer Riku in Karakura. This walkthrough takes you through Lost Spirits, Combat Training, and A Soul in Peril, then follows his directions toward Squad service in Soul Society. Controls below use the PC layout.

At a glance

Speak to Riku beside the starting park's tree with E. Complete Lost Spirits by approaching wandering souls at Lost Soul Grounds and pressing P for Soul Passage. Follow Introduction to Riku near the bridge, defeat his training Hollow, and return. For A Soul in Peril, defeat both Hollows, use the displayed E Soul Passage interaction on Kaito Ito, and return to Riku. When he gives you Join a Squad, press U, select Soul Society, enter the portal, and seek the Head Captain in Seireitei.

Meet Riku and Complete Lost Spirits

Begin on the Shinigami route in Karakura. Officer Riku stands beside a tree in the starting park, wearing black robes with a sheathed sword. His nearby interaction label reads Riku Abarai.

  1. Approach Riku and press E — Speak.
  2. Advance his dialogue with Continue to accept Lost Spirits.
  3. Head to Lost Soul Grounds and approach a wandering soul closely.
  4. Press P to perform Soul Passage. Look for the white effect and completion message.
  5. Keep guiding souls onward until the quest tracker changes to Introduction, directing you to meet Officer Riku near the bridge.

Use the tracker to decide when to move on. The bridge meeting is the next stage of Riku's training.

Return to the Bridge for Combat Training

Follow Introduction to the large tree on the grassy riverbank beside the bridge. This is Riku's meeting point for Combat Training and later turn-ins.

  1. Speak to Riku to accept Combat Training.
  2. Defeat the single training Hollow.
  3. Follow Turn In — Officer Riku back to the riverside tree.
  4. Approach him and press E — Speak to turn in the quest and continue to A Soul in Peril.

During the fight, watch the Hollow's movements before attacking. Use F to block and Q to dodge. When it commits to an attack, dash away, then attack during the opening. Avoid staying in range and trading blows through its attack sequence.

If your attacks are not working, use the combat and attack troubleshooting guide. For help finding the meeting point, see Karakura landmarks and NPC markers.

Rescue the Lost Soul in A Soul in Peril

A Soul in Peril sends you through Riku's Senkaimon to protect a Lost Soul from two Hollows.

  1. Follow the quest's directions into Riku's Senkaimon and the rescue event.
  2. Defeat both Hollows before they consume the Lost Soul. Use the event's remaining-enemy counter to track the fight.
  3. Once the node is cleared, approach Kaito Ito, the translucent soul beside the crosswalk.
  4. Use his displayed E — Soul Passage interaction. This rescue interaction uses E, unlike the P control used during Lost Spirits.
  5. Follow the Officer Riku turn-in marker and speak to him.

The quest tracker changes to Return to Officer Riku when the event clears. Send Kaito onward before leaving the rescue area.

Collect Rewards and Head to Soul Society

The starter quests list these completion rewards:

Quest Quest EXP Quest Yen
Lost Spirits 1,640 EXP 150 Yen
Combat Training 2,500 EXP 225 Yen
A Soul in Peril 1,890 EXP 150 Yen

Quest rewards are separate from EXP earned during individual actions and from event-clear loot. A Soul in Peril's rescue clear can award a Common Event Chest before you return to Riku; that chest is separate from the quest's listed EXP and Yen. For other objectives and turn-ins, consult the quest directory.

When Riku gives you Join a Squad, continue his dialogue to read the travel instructions:

  1. Press U to open World Travel.
  2. Select Soul Society.
  3. Walk into the portal to travel there.
  4. Follow the objective to speak with the Head Captain in Seireitei about your service assignment.

Join a Squad lists Squad Membership as its reward. Continue with the Squad and Shikai walkthrough for choosing your service assignment, speaking to your captain, and pursuing your first release.

When Another Quest Blocks the Dialogue

If an NPC says you already have a quest, finish or cancel your current quest, then speak to the NPC again. If Lost Spirits is still active, completing its soul objectives keeps you moving through Riku's tutorial.

The Multiple Quests game pass supports up to three simultaneous mission-board quests. If Riku's dialogue blocks progress, finish or cancel the active quest before speaking to him again.
