Build your Yen balance for skill purchases and collect Essence on the Hollow route. Here are the quest rewards, chest income examples, and skill costs to plan around.
Earn Yen from quest turn-ins and event chests, then spend it in the Skill Shop. Diving Impale costs 500 Yen and Mountain Splitter costs 1,500 Yen, so budget 2,000 Yen for both. To gain Essence as a Hollow, approach a Lost Soul and hold E until the interaction finishes; a First Meal reward example is 5 Essence and 160 EXP per consumption.

For skill purchases, focus on your Yen balance. For Essence, use the Lost Soul interaction described below.
Turn in completed tutorial quests before starting another round of events. Their Yen rewards give you a clear savings target, while repeatable events can supply chests as you continue fighting.

First Meal can initially display 180 Yen, then show 150 Yen at the return stage; the completed turn-in pays 150 Yen in that case. Use 150 Yen for this budget.
Follow the return objective when a quest sends you back to its NPC. Combat rewards and event chests are separate from the quest payout. Use the quest directory to check objectives and turn-in contacts.
After the tutorial, repeat events you can reliably clear and open the chests you earn. These opening examples show how chest income can contribute to your savings:

These are individual opening results, not guaranteed amounts per chest or batch. Budget from the Yen you actually receive rather than assuming every Common chest pays 100 Yen. See chest sources and opening controls for the full loot and inventory guide.
For a Strength-focused start, aim for 2,000 Yen to buy Diving Impale and Mountain Splitter. In the shop configuration with Mountain Splitter at 10 STR and Fault Ripper at 15 STR, adding Fault Ripper raises the total to 5,500 Yen.

Diving Impale is the cheaper first purchase and gives you a forward thrust that staggers enemies. Mountain Splitter adds a heavy slash with knockback. Save for Fault Ripper after those purchases if you want another frontal sword attack and meet its requirement.
Check the Strength requirement separately from the price. Diving Impale requires 5 STR. Mountain Splitter and Fault Ripper require 10 and 15 STR in one shop configuration, or 20 and 55 STR in the other; follow the requirement in your current Skill Shop before allocating points. Having enough Yen alone does not unlock a skill.
Open the Skills menu to make your purchase, then check that the move is equipped. The skills guide covers the full requirement tables and equipment process.
As a Hollow, look for translucent humanoid Lost Souls around Lost Soul Grounds.
First Meal reward example: 5 Essence and 160 EXP from one Lost Soul.
Use the interaction instead of attacking: killing a Lost Soul does not count as consuming it.
During First Meal, consume three Lost Souls, then return to Koshiro. The Essence and EXP arrive from each consumption; the quest's Yen is a separate turn-in reward. Follow the Hollow starter tutorial for Koshiro's locations and the rest of the quest chain.
